Clown Chronicles: February 2025

What happened in January

OMG! What a FUN party!

We are so excited that we had an amazing turnout for our January 2025 New Year Party- We have not been together since November because we have traditionally not had a December meeting due to the busy Holiday season. So it was long overdue for us to get together to celebrate clowning and the New Year.

On Monday, January 13th we got together at Dal and Cinde Sanders home to celebrate. We had chili and fixins’, officer installations, awards and most of all fun and fellowship.

We installed New Board members including President, Cinde Sanders, Vice President Tricia Gregory, Secretary, Sterling Beard, Treasurer Debbie Davis, Sgt at Arms Marth Warren, Immediate Past President Rudy Rosales, Board members, William Beaty, Willie Thomas, Susan Keys and Tony Winn.

Congratulations to the 2024 award winners including:

  • Al Armstrong Clown of the Year Award: Rudy Rosales

  • Nicola Bradley Creative Arts Award winner: Margaret Clauder

  • Hubba Hubba Group award winners: (Movie Fiasco) William Beaty, Martha Warren, Ellis DePrima, Rudy Rosales, Cinde Sanders, Tony Winiecki and Debbie Davis\

  • Board of Directors Award: Tricia Gregory

  • Most Improved Joey: Willie Thomas.

The evening was capped off by a fun surprise guest performance by magician Dal Sanders. It was a wonderful way to begin a new year with new and old friends and a beginning to Keep Magic and Clowning alive in 2025.

Don’t forget, the World Clown Association Convention is in Dallas March 3-7!

If you are not able to attend the whole WCA convention, please make plans to join us for Wednesday only. The day rate is $75. This is the day that the DFW Clowns "R" Us will participate in the group skit at 10:30am.

We are also presenting a lecture called Tex-Mex at 1:00pm and we are hosting the hospitality room at 9:30pm. We would love your help and support for the day that DFW Clowns "R" Us will be spotlighted at this international, clown convention.

A Word from our Clown in Chief:

I am honored to be elected as President of the DFW Clowns “R” Us alley. I am a current member of all the local, regional and national clown alleys and have served on the board of Mid-Cities Clown Alley 85 for many years before the merger. I am also currently the President of the Texas Clown Association. My motto for DFW Clowns “R” Us and the TCA this year is to GROW the clown community. If we all GET JUST ONE person to come to our local meetings, I know they will get the clown FEVER and join us in making kids and families SMILE.

REFRESH: A Guide to Revitalizing Your Clown Character, Show, and Props

It is a new year so let’s take this time to renew and refresh our clown character, show and props. As clowns, we bring joy, laughter and wonder to our audiences. But even the funniest acts and brightest props can lose their luster over time. That’s why it’s important to take a step back and REFRESH! Here is a simple acronym to guide you through the process of cleaning, organizing, and reinvigorating your clown show and props.

  • Reevaluate Your Act

Take a critical look at your performance. Are there jokes, tricks, or bits that feel outdated or stale? Consider incorporating new routines or updating existing ones to keep your show fresh and engaging.

  • Examine Your Props

Inspect all your props and costumes. Are they clean, functional, and visually appealing? Replace or repair anything that does not meet your high standards.

  • Freshen Up Your Look

Your appearance is a big part of your clown persona. Take time to refresh your makeup style, costume and accessories. Keep your look professional.

  • Restore and Revitalize

Deep clean your props and costumes to give them a new lease on life.

  • Eliminate Clutter

Go through your storage space and declutter. Donate or discard props and costumes you no longer use.

  • Simplify Your Setup

Consider how you transport and set up your show. Can you streamline your process?

  • Hone Your Skills

Finally, dedicate time to practicing your craft. Refining your skills can breathe new life into your act and keep your audience entertained.

By following the REFRESH method, you can ensure your clown show remains vibrant, professional and full of joy. Remember a little effort goes a long way in keeping the magic alive for your audience!

Coming at our February meeting (2/10)

Magical Matty will help us to create a show that flows and fits to a theme. Put any bits together and make them flow beautifully. Juggling, comedy skills, a skit, magic or any silly bit can work harmoniously together.

Valentine’s Impromptu Effects

You do not need commercial props to make magic on Valentines’ Day. You can use ordinary objects and a bit of showmanship!

The Amazing Candy Trick

Check out this video

Just change the M&M’s for some little candy hearts with messages on them and presto — it’s a Valentine’s trick!

Another Amazing Candy Trick

This is an easy-to-make, easy-to-perform version of a mindreading classic. The effect is that you show your spectator three different flavored candies. Tell your spectator you have already written a note predicting which candy they will choose. Then ask her to choose one of the candies, she can even eat it if she wants! Immediately you reach into your pocket and pull out a paper that names the correct candy. The secret is that you actually write three different predictions, each one naming a different candy and each hidden in a different place. You just have to remember where you put each paper that names that candy.
